The DebutanteFor Young Ladies
Grace is not inherited; it is cultivated. A proper education in manners and cultivation for the next generation of ladies.
Grace, Cultivated EarlyOur Approach
The Debutante is our line for young ladies, from the primary years to the final years of school.
Manners learned early become natural bearing rather than remembered rules. To stand well, to greet someone properly, to be at ease at any table — these are not simply forms to memorise. They are the beginning of the habit of treating oneself with respect.
We do not teach by severity. Every point of form is explained — why it exists, and why it is beautiful — so that a young lady adopts it by her own understanding. Our teaching draws on the British finishing tradition and on Japanese refinement in equal measure.
“Elegance is cultivated through experience, not birthright.”
What She Will LearnThe Six Pillars
Deportment
Bearing
Standing, walking, sitting, the bow and the curtsey. When posture settles, expression and voice follow. This is the foundation of everything else.
Table Manners
At Table
Western and Japanese dining, practised at fine venues, so that she is never uncertain wherever she is invited.
Conversation
Greetings
First introductions, being presented to others, speaking with adults — how to listen as much as how to speak.
Dress & Style
Appearance
Dressing for the occasion, understanding dress codes, caring for one’s appearance — and learning to see what truly suits her.
Culture
Cultivation
The customs of other countries and the history of court and society — preparation for study or life abroad as much as for home.
Kindness
The Heart
Beneath every form lies consideration for others: to give way, to give credit, to give thanks. This is the heart of good breeding.
The ParticularsPractical Matters
Age
Young ladies of primary through senior school age. Content is arranged individually according to age and experience.
Mothers are welcome
A mother may attend alongside her daughter. Sharing the same vocabulary at home is by far the surest way for the lessons to take root.
Private or small group
Chosen to suit the temperament of the young lady herself.
Where we teach
The Imperial Hotel Tokyo and other leading venues in the city. We believe manners are best learned where they are actually used.
How to begin
Chiefly by introduction or invitation. We begin with a private interview with the parents to understand your wishes and your daughter’s character.
Number of lessons, dates and fees are proposed individually once the programme is agreed.
Her first step into society.
We should be glad to discuss your daughter’s education with you.
